Celebrate
Take a moment and reflect on how far you’ve come. How much have you accomplished? How many songs can you play? How many chords, scales, theory ideas or concepts do you know? Sometimes we forget about what we have achieved and focus too much on what we don’t yet have. Once in a while I hear my students expressing their grief because they can’t play exactly like Metallica or Van Halen. I remind them -”maybe not yet, but let’s look at how long those guys have been playing and compare it to how long you’ve been playing.” Then we take a quick “inventory” of what they DO know, what they CAN play. They immediately turn around and say, “Wow, you’re right. I really DO know a lot of things. I CAN play lots of things.”
So take a few minutes and think about where your playing really is right now. Give yourself a pat on the back for what you’ve accomplished. Then think about what you want to achieve next. Whatever your goals are, you’ll get there if you follow this ultimate success formula – Identify your goals specifically, take massive action towards them, find out what’s working and what’s not working and make adjustments accordingly.
Just the fact that you are reading this that tells me that you are a cut above the rest. You are seeking to get an edge on your playing. I acknowledge and admire that in you. Now go celebrate the fact that you are a guitar player that is a step above the rest -Always improving, always growing, and always creating.
